For the last two years the world has been shaken by an unprecedented financial crisis: layoffs, factory closures, unemployment. In this dramatic context, unions find themselves in the front line up against the government. However when barely 6% of workers belong to a union, what is the real power of these unions? To answer this question we followed on a daily basis the first French union, the CGT, in the field during three typical social conflicts (Goodyear, Molex, Total), and entered the leaders’ private lives, Bernard Thibault and Maryse Dumas. Undergoing radical transformation, torn between tough action and reforms, will the CGT be up to the high stakes involved?
